Caffeine citrate is one of the most prescribed drug in the present day NICU for apnea. Its efficacy, tolerability, wide therapeutic index and safety margin has made it the drug of choice among the methylxanthines. Indication
Caffeine Citrate is indicated for the treatment of apnea in premature infants between 28-33 weeks gestational age.
Contraindications
Caffeine Citrate is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components. It is important to confirm with your Pharmacist the contents of the medication prior to therapy.
Precautions
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and in cases of caffeine overdose, seizures have been reported. Caffeine citrate should be used with caution in infants with seizure disorders.
